Liturgy at Duke

Tuesday compline

You are invited to compline every Tuesday at 9:15 pm in the chapel of the Falcone-Arena House.

Compline is a 20-minute service of night prayer, with psalms, scripture readings, and a special hymn to the Virgin Mary. Come sing with us or join in silent meditation.

Welcome (back) to Duke!
You are invited to join in Vespers (sung Evening Prayer) each Sunday at 7. For the next two weeks, it will be preceded by a mini-workshop on the basics of Gregorian chant.

When: Sunday, September 2 and Sunday, September 9

6:30 pm: Brief introduction to Gregorian chant for newcomers
7:00 pm: Vespers
7:30 pm: Free dinner for all

Festive Mass for the Easter season

You are invited to Mass at 6 pm on Saturday, April 21st at the Falcone-Arena House (Newman Catholic Student Center), just off East Campus at Buchanan & W. Trinity (map)

We will be celebrating the Easter season with especially festive music: Renaissance motets by Josquin des Prez (his famous Ave Maria) and Orlando di Lasso, hymns harmonized by Bach, and simple Gregorian chants for the whole congregation to sing.

Tenebrae for Holy Week: April 5, 6, 7

Join us as we watch and pray during this most holy time of the year.

Tenebrae (Latin for "darkness") is a beautiful and ancient liturgy recalling the betrayal, suffering, and death of Christ during Holy Week. As we sing the Psalms, the Lamentations of Jeremiah, and other prayers, candles are gradually extinguished, symbolizing the darkness of the world when deprived of the light of Christ.

All are welcome to chant with us - music will be provided - or to join us in silence for as long as you wish.

When: midnight to 2 am, April 5, 6, and 7
(the early morning hours of Thursday, Friday, and Saturday)
